10 Years

Kathryn and I celebrated our 10-year anniversary this weekend. Wow! Time has flown. To celebrate Kathryn and I went up to Ft. Bragg, CA, which is just north of Mendocino (about 4-hours North of where we live). We had a great time. We stayed in a Bed and Breakfast that was actually the oldest house in Ft. Bragg and only 3 blocks to the beach.

The house was an old Victorian house, and while the hostess wasn't the best, we had a great time. (It was even a little funny because at night I am pretty sure I heard a mouse scampering in a wall.) The house also had a "water tower" that was actually a tower that had a total of 4 rooms in it. It had an exterior staircase to access the rooms, and the roof, where you could watch whales from. Or, you could just enjoy the AMAZING sunset over the ocean that is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!

And of course we went to the beach.

For those of you who don't know, Ft. Bragg has the highest concentration of "Sea Glass" in the world. So, of course Ft. Bragg was at the top of the list of places that she wanted to go. And as long as I get a comfy bed and good food, I am happy just about anywhere.

Unfortunately we didn't take many pictures, and none of the camera-shy Kathryn.

We stuffed ourselves on crab cakes, crab sandwiches, crab on our green salad, and of course I squeezed a steak in there somewhere.

Tommy spent a day and a half with the grandparents and didn't even notice that we were gone until after his nap on day 2. He did great. If I knew he was going to do so well with the first time being left behind, I would have booked 2 nights instead of one.


And you know you are in the sticks when you see signs posted like this downtown:



If you can't read it, it says "don't ride bicycles, skateboards, or horses on the sidewalks."

Hilarious!

Ft. Bragg used to be a huge lumber community, and of course to brag about their town, there is a monument of the biggest tree that was chopped down. It was in 1943, and here is a photo of it's cross-section:

On Saturday when we started making our way back south, we stopped for lunch at the Bay View Cafe in Mendocino. It is across the street from the water, and really allows you a wonderful view. The whole time I was there I was wondering why we left the camera in the car. (But of course because I am lazy, it stayed in the car.) The view was breath-taking.

For both days the skies were clear and the weather was warm(ish), somewhere in the 60's.

I can't say enough about how much fun we had. If anyone is thinking of trying to get away, I highly recommend the area.

And that about wraps our weekend up. Here is a picture of our pathetic dog. His surgery is scheduled for this week. He is too lazy to play ball anymore, and has lost tons of his muscle with the past 2.5 months of no exercise, now he just lays about, and uses balls for pillows.

November, December, Etc.

Yes, I freely admit it, I am too lazy to post to the blog as often as I should. Between working hours when I should be sleeping, and sleeping the hours when I should be working my schedule is a little weird.

There are a lot more photos of Tommy, but the camera hasn't been downloaded, and again...that lazy factor I spoke of.

Work is going well. The hours take some getting used to, but I get to wake Tommy up in the morning and I help put him to bed each night, and that's nice.

On to all the news to try and catch everyone up. We have year-long passes to Happy Hollow (the local petty zoo/park) and Tommy gets to go usually a couple of times a month or more. So, of course I had to put some pictures of that in the blog.

Christmas was fun, as always. We got too many gifts, and are really lucky to live so close family.

We had a bit of a problem with our Christmas tree this year. Every year we go up to Skyline and chop a tree down and bring it home. This year Tommy was running out of patience with us, or he could have just been cold, but long story short, I chopped down a tree that Kathryn dubbed the "devil's tree." It was soooo spiny that I couldn't even handle it with leather gloves on. Once we brought it home, Kathryn thought she would be able to tame it, and decorate it.

Nope.

We ended up having to sneak over to a tree lot and get a replacement.

How embarrassing.

The bad news of our new year is that Porkchop tore his ACL. (Yes, pigs...I mean dogs, have them too.) This means a very costly, unexpected surgery. If he was anyone else's dog, I would say just let him be, or take him to the back 40...and...you know...

But, it's Porkchop and we love him, and he wouldn't be the same if he couldn't play ball for the rest of his 8-10 years of life. So, we have to suck it up and find the cash for it.

October

Nothing really exciting. Tommy went to his first pumpkin patch this month. We went over to Half Moon Bay, to have a day at the patch, some seafood, and to wiggle our toes in the sand. Tommy thought the pumpkins were great. He would try each one out by going over to it, and then sitting on it.
It was hilarious!
He did this for probably 15-20 minutes before he realized that big semi-trailer trucks were zooming by on the highway 100 yards away. Then he would just stare and point at those. At least until he thought that he needed a closer look and would weave through the pumpkins and try and get closer to the road.





As you can see, he had quite a choice pf pumpkins. But once we saw the prices, we were glad to just get some mini-pumpkins from grandma Lynda.

The pumpkin patch lost its glamor after he started trying to "see" the trucks rolling by, so we went on to our next activity.

We went to a restaurant called "Barbara's Fish Trap" that had been recommended to us.

They had some "famous" clam chowder that I had in a bread bowl. (Mmmmm...) And Kathryn tried out a delicious crab sandwich. Tommy had chicken n' chips, (fish would be too adventurous for him) and he loved dipping everything in ranch, and/or cocktail sauce. Any kind of "dip" is the greatest thing for him. He loves to dip his pancakes in syrup, applesauce, yogurt, whatever is available.

This week Tommy was able to go and visit his great-grandparents in southern California with his mom and some of his cousins. This is his newest cousin Milo, who Tommy calls "Mimo."


And who needs to buy toys when kids are fine with an empty box?


And I will just finish up with some random pumpkin patch photos.

September

Kathryn told me that since she writes so much in Tommy's journal that I have to update the blog more often.

At church today, I realized, yet again, that how we say something is just as important as what we say. Many times I find that even though people have interesting things to say, that the way they present their ideas is so convoluted that I can't ever tell what the point is.

Anyways, it was just a thought I had.

Summer is finally officially over. I think we are now at the 2nd day of autumn if my mother can be believed. Tommy is growing like a weed (like always). He has recently exploded in the speaking department. Starting about 2 weeks ago he has been working on A LOT of new words. It is so amazing to see the developmental changes that he is going through. I think that I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend so much time with him. First when I was still in school I was around so much for when he was a newborn, and now I only work a 3-4 day work week. Of course the days I work are longer because of that, but it does give me a lot of time on my days off to spend with him and Kathryn.

In two weeks I will be going on the first trip of hopefully a new tradition among the Skeehan men of getting together for a weekend every year. Something to look forward to, and something to pass along to the next generation as they become 12-years old and can come along. We don't have a lot of traditions, and it will be nice to start this one I think.

Hopefully, it won't be too cold, and we will be able to have some outdoor fun without freezing.

My work schedule will be changing yet again in another week, but at least after that it will be consistent for the next several months. For those that are curious, comparing it to my last job is apples and oranges, but I am enjoying it and the more I work the more I realize how lucky I have been to have grown up in the area and with the family that I did.

To be honest it is too much work to try and balance out captions for each photo. I know I could, if I just used this program more, but it is too much of a hassle. So, just to give an over view, some of these photos are from "Happy Hollow" a children's zoo and park, the beach, and the rest of them you can pretty much figure out where we were.

Yesterday Kathryn and I took Tommy to a donut shop where they make the donuts in front of you. Tommy has his own way of eating them, that involves lots of dancing and lip-smacking sounds.

August

Well, well, well...some of us were able to go on vacation to Lake Tahoe and swim, and boat, and walk, and eat really delicious, but very unhealthy, food. Unfortunately I had to work and didn't have a chance to go. So, for two days it was me and the dog home alone, then just me. (I can't count the cats, because they are cats, and they don't count for company).

Kathryn hasn't loaded the Tahoe photos yet, so you will have to wait to see Tommy swimming, etc.

Things are just moving right along. My schedule at work changes about every 4-5 weeks, which kind of stinks because it means that we can't really get our family on a consistent schedule. But, I am having fun and Kathryn and Tommy love to have me around 3-4 days a week. Of course that just translates into more time when I should be unpacking, sorting, and discarding all the junk that we have accumulated over the past 9 years that we've been married.

So much junk!! Moving always stinks, because it makes you realize how much stuff you have, how much you actually use, and how much stuff you just can't bring yourself to get rid of, just in case you might actually use it someday.

Tommy's new breakthrough at Tahoe was he now calls for his: "Mammy." I don't know if this is true since as soon as he saw me again all he ever uses for a parent is "da da." (But Kathryn swears that he calls her "mammy."

I just thought that I should post something up so I am not being too lazy and not letting everyone know what is going on with us.
